英國(guó)皇家工程院院士Bernard L Weiss到北理工交流訪(fǎng)問(wèn)

　　10月12日上午，應(yīng)北京理工大學(xué)信息與電子學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)龍騰的邀請(qǐng)，英國(guó)Sussex大學(xué)皇家工程院院士Bernard L Weiss（the Head of School of Engineering and Design）來(lái)校交流訪(fǎng)問(wèn)并做了一場(chǎng)精彩講座。信息與電子學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)龍騰，部分教授及相關(guān)教師和大批博士生參加了本次講座。

講座開(kāi)始前，龍騰對(duì)Bernard L Weiss院士的到來(lái)表示熱烈的歡迎，并對(duì)于前來(lái)參加講座的各位教師和同學(xué)表示感謝。

　　隨后，Professor Bernard L Weiss對(duì)Engineering & Design, University of Sussex, UK做了簡(jiǎn)要的介紹，并對(duì)Semiconductor QuantumWell Structures and Devices課題目前的研究和發(fā)展展開(kāi)介紹并進(jìn)行了深入的探討。在講座過(guò)程中在場(chǎng)的學(xué)院領(lǐng)導(dǎo)和師生始終保持著和嘉賓的及時(shí)溝通和探討，并在會(huì)后針對(duì)未來(lái)與信息與電子學(xué)院學(xué)科課題組合作及雙方的人才培養(yǎng)與學(xué)術(shù)交流等多方面事宜進(jìn)行了深入的探討。

　　Biography of Professor Bernard L Weiss:

　　Bernard L Weiss, the Head of School of Engineering and Design, University of Sussex, UK, has a distinguished research career, especially in optoelectronic and microwave devices. He has published more than 125 journal papers and fifty conference papers, and has been awarded research funding from major funding bodies such as EPSRC, EU, NATO, DERA, and the US Army. He has been awarded a DSc and a DEng in recognition of his research achievements in addition to being elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and several other awards.

　　Professor Bernard L Weiss graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with a BSc(Hons) in Electrical Engineering in 1971 and a PhD in microwave semiconductor devices in 1975 under the supervision of Professor Hans Hartnagel.  Following a personal SRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship researching microwave semiconducor devices and a Wolfson Foundation Research Fellowship studying thin film technology, he moved to University College London in 1977 to study ZnO acoustic transducers and NDT with Professor Erc Ash FRS.  In 1979 he joined the University of Surrey as a Lecturer and established research in optoelectronic devices and technology in LiNbO3, Si and III-V semiconductors.  He became Professor of Microelectronics in 1996, Head of the School of Electronics and Physical Sciences in 2001 and Pro-Vice-Chancellor in 2004.  In 2009 he moved to the University of Sussex to become Head of the School of Engineering and Design and also became Acting Head of the School of Informatics.

　　He has held external appointments including Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong (1996-2000) and visiting appointments at the University of Berkeley, California (1981), University of Cincinnati, Ohio (1991), Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, (1994) and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (2000).
